I am Dr Robert Baker, known as "Dr Bob" to my younger patients. I treat adults, children, and teenagers with communication problems, stuttering, learning disabilities (reading and writing), ADHD, and symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
I am a Research Psychoanalyst registered with the Medical Board of California. My approach uses the ideas of the British Object Relations Kleinian school and a contemporary approach to address early developmental issues and thinking process disorders. These early developmental issues can cause symptoms such as stuttering, learning disabilities, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum.
During recent research, I learned of the work of Dr. Stanley Cobb, who greatly influenced both the neurology and psychiatry departments at Harvard University in the early 20th century. Dr. Cobb's work greatly affected the areas of the development of psychiatry, psychology, speech pathology and psychoanalysis in this country and the rest of the world; including the successful treatment of stuttering, other learning disabilities. I will go into much greater detail in my book which will be coming out at the end of the year.
Although I came into this field due to personal issues, my research and practice has allowed me to further delve into learning disabilities, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Using the British School Kleinian ideas, especially in the area of developmental and thinking process disorders (more on this below), successful treatment is demonstrated through my patients’ success.
When I speak around the country or talk to my fellow colleagues (even my fellow psychoanalysts) their reaction is often stunning, illuminating, and often shocking. But, with the arrival of the movie “The Kings Speech” several years ago, my ideas and thoughts are taking hold and are becoming common place and as many colleagues, and even speech pathologists say, “of course, your ideas make complete sense,” especially when underscored by your patient success rate.

What is a "glitch in the thinking process"? It is a glitch that occurs during early infant development that interferes with the way a person thinks and integrates information. It is NOT a measure of intelligence, as many people with this issue are very bright, even brilliant. Many with this glitch function well or well enough in the world because they are so bright, but some people require assistance to resolve this issue to use their intelligence and relate well to others. I will be publishing a book on the complexities of this glitch in the near future.
How did I learn about this treatment? A series of personal events led me to study to research unique stuttering treatments. When I came across this treatment in my research, I decided to enter into experimental treatment myself, which eliminated my own stuttering. My subsequent study and clinical experience in the Los Angeles Unified Public School district and in my private practice led me to apply the treatment to various learning disabilities, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. School aged patients have moved from Special Education to mainstream classes or Magnet School. Adults can improve their business or career performance and satisfaction, as well as experience life changing improvements in family, personal, and professional relationships. You can read more about my personal journey and discovery of the treatment here.
Is this treatment for everyone with these symptoms?
Treatment may be for you or your child if:
symptoms of stuttering, learning disabilities, ADHD, or Autism Spectrum Disorder are interfering with life satisfaction, and
you are not satisfied with results from other treatments
Treatment is not for you or your child if:
symptoms are the result of physical injury or trauma,
other treatments have worked well for you, or
you are content and happy with your life, and these symptoms do not interfere with life satisfaction
For those of you who stutter, an easy way to indicate the treatment might help is to determine if you stutter while talking to others or while others are present, but do not stutter when you are all alone speaking only to yourself.
Determination of whether this treatment is appropriate can only be made during an in person consultation in my Westwood Los Angeles office. During and after treatment, personal, emotional, and academic/business life will change--the world will seem to open up to you or your child in a way not experienced before. Awareness of the world will transform. I say this based upon patients’ personal experience, as well as my own.
